The Best Couples & Bridal Photoshoot Locations in Chicago: A Photo/Video Team's Guide

By Roaming Vow Film Co. — an elopement & wedding photography + videography team, wherever you roam

Chicago might be the most versatile portrait city in the country. In a single afternoon you can go from a glassy lakefront with the skyline stacked behind you, to a hidden garden with a waterfall, to a moody downtown alley full of brick and neon. Whether you're planning an engagement session, a couples shoot "just because," or bridal portraits in your gown, the city gives you range most places can't touch.

Below are our favorites for couples and bridal sessions, grouped by the feeling you're after, with a note on each about light, timing, and crowds. And because Chicago quietly requires photo permits at a lot of its best locations, there's a rundown of that at the end. Read it before you fall in love with a spot.

Where to Elope in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is one of the most underrated elopement cities in the country. You get a world-class skyline, twenty-six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, some of the best architecture in North America, and — drive an hour or two in almost any direction — sandstone canyons, waterfalls, dunes, and prairie. For a couple who wants their day both beautifully photographed and captured on film, that range is a gift. You can trade vows on a rooftop at golden hour and be standing in a canyon the next morning.

We're a photo-and-video team, and we shoot elopements all over — now with Chicago as home base. Below are our favorite places to say "I do" here, first in the city and then the wild spots just outside it, with a note on each about what it gives us as photographers and filmmakers. How a place holds still in a photograph and how it moves on film are two different kinds of beautiful, and the best locations deliver both.

How to Include Family Who Can’t Attend Your Elopement on Your Special Day

Elopements are intimate by design. They’re about stripping away expectations and choosing presence, intention, and adventure. But just because you’re exchanging vows on a windswept ridge or deep in the desert doesn’t mean the people you love most aren’t part of it. 🤍

Over the years, we’ve filmed elopements where family couldn’t attend for all kinds of reasons—distance, health, finances, or timing. And honestly? Some of the most emotional moments of the day come from the ways couples choose to include them anyway.

Here are some meaningful, intentional ways to bring your people into your elopement—no matter how far away they are.

Northern Utah Elopement Guide

At Roaming Desert Film Co., we’ve always believed that eloping is about stripping things back to what actually matters—your connection and your story. And if that just so happens to take place in the magic of the mountains in the Wasatch Ridge, that’s totally fine by us! Northern Utah creates these timeless moments of your love story so effortlessly! Tucked just outside the city, the canyons here feel wild - without being unreachable, intimate - without being isolated. They’re the kind of places where the mountains show up big and every turn in the road feels like it could be the start of a memory you’ll talk about forever!

Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, and American Fork Canyon are our forever favorites! Each one has its own personality: Big Cottonwood is versatile and dramatic, with winding roads, alpine lakes, and textures that look unreal on film. Little Cottonwood feels bold and rugged—towering granite walls, moody weather, and that “we’re doing something epic” energy. American Fork Canyon neighbors the Alpine loop and has gorgeous reservoirs and lake - especially as the seasons change, with golden aspens coming to life.
